IOM Kosovo conducts its first Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Exercise
On the 28th of September, IOM Kosovo’s DTM Team conducted the first exercise in Kosovo, covering the most frequented locations by migrants such as borderlands, abandoned buildings, hostels, religious facilities, and bus stations which resulted in meeting and reaching out to 94 newly arriving migrants throughout the day. They were mostly young men, families with children, and a considerable number of unaccompanied minors between the ages of 13 and 17. Most of them cam e from Syria.
The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) gathers and analyzes data to disseminate critical multi layered information on the mobility, vulnerabilities, and needs of displaced and mobile populations that enables decision makers and responders to provide these populations with better context specific assistance.
Due to the great cooperation with the Directorate of Migration of Pristina Municipality and border officials - IOM assisted migrants in the registration process, language interpretation and gave them legal advises. Under the DTM objectives - we also conducted surveys to have a clearer picture about migrants’ flow in Kosovo, as well as identifying their needs. From what is concluded that, most of common one is health issues.
In anticipation of winter, considering the cold weather and the journey difficulties they faced, IOM in cooperation with International Committee of the Red Cross in Kosovo, provided these migrants with winter clothes and minors with emergency backpacks.
IOM Kosovo is determined to continuously support and assist new coming migrants, and those who did not reach reception centers. Their needs should be heard and improved.
