Pre-hospital treatment guidelines developed for Kosovar ambulances

International Medical Programme (IMP) Region Östergötland held a workshop on the development of pre-hospital treatment guidelines in collaboration with the ambulance services of Pristina and Prizren

Today, the International Medical Program (IMP) Region Östergötland has met with the managers of ambulance services in Pristina and Prizren, together with their doctors and nurse staff, in a workshop setting to discuss and develop pre-hospital treatment guidelines. The guidelines are based on already established European guidelines, meeting international standards, and through the workshop they were translated into Albanian and modified to fit the Kosovar context. Five guidelines have been developed in group discussions and with the support of an experienced team of medical practitioners from Sweden, to be used in the future when treating patients that suffer from the most common diseases in Kosovo prior hospitalization.

The managers of both the ambulance services in Pristina and Prizren have said that there was a „great need for harmonized and standardized guidelines“ and  they were confident that the guidelines will facilitate their everyday work, thus benefitting the patients in the end.  Although the ambulance services in Pristina and Prizren - after all the two biggest cities in Kosovo - are functioning as local pilot projects, the goal is to subsequently have the guidelines adopted nation-wide.

IOM Kosovo is supporting the project as part of their Swedish Medical Programme and has been hosting today's event.
