Sports Activities Continue for Migrants
April 6, 2021 - One thing that makes a real difference to mental and physical wellbeing is sport.
IOM’s Mobile Team has recently extended recreational activities for migrants at the immigration centre for foreigners, led by a professional fitness trainer.
The sports activities with migrants are funded by the EU Service for Foreign Policy Instruments #EUForeignPolicy within the project Addressing COVID-19 Challenges within the Migrant and Refugee Response in the Western Balkans.
“We initially organized 4 sports activities and recognized that sport is a very important tool for helping migrants get relief, improve physical health and mental health issues. When you place a group of young people in a field for a sports activity, they become equal, they become friends. The more physical activities we hold, the better migrants feel about themselves and their future,” said Ilir Hoti, migrant counsellor and member of the IOM Mobile Team.
The Mobile Team also offers regular psychological support sessions for struggling migrants, operates the IOM Infoline number in Arabic and English offering information to migrants, distributes emergency backpacks to vulnerable migrants, and offers direct assistance at the police registration centre in Pristina.
