Strengthening Communities Through Television Discussions About Multilingualism & Language Rights
Following the marking of International Mother Language Day, a productive discussion was broadcast on Kanal 10 “Prime Time” on 23 February, focusing on multilingualism and language rights. It also addressed the Balkanistic Languages Programme at the University of Pristina and how it can serve as a connecting bridge for communities living in Kosovo and beyond.
During the discussion, acting Deputy Minister of Education said that a society cannot function if its communities do not communicate with one another, and the communities cannot integrate in Kosovo society if they don’t have the opportunity to learn and speak each other’s languages.
Panelists included the acting Deputy Minister of Education Xhavit Rexhaj, Kosovo’s Language Commissioner Slavisa Mladenovic, and the Dean of the Philological Faculty Lindita Rugova.
The programme was part of a series of joint activities supported by IOM Kosovo, UNMIK - United Nations Mission in Kosovo, and the British Embassy in Pristina, to promote the rich linguistic diversity of Kosovo, and promote the www.voc-up.com platform - a free online tool to learn Albanian and Serbian languages, for marking International Mother Language Day.
